I think you’ve missed the point. The aim is not to write for the garbage bin, obviously. That’s simply one way for some people to avoid getting bogged down in thoughts that say every sentence has to be perfect from the start, the organization must be perfect, the logic, flow, voice etc, all must be perfect. The first step is to get down the information you want to convey. After that it clearly says to go back and clean it up.
This is the actual point you seem to be making —
“Get out of your own way so that you can get the first draft down”.
“Writing is rewriting. You can’t edit a blank page. Don’t get it right, just get it written.”
“Like Anne Lamott said: “For me and most of the other writers I know, writing is not rapturous. In fact, the only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts.”
I am unsure how all of that is different than what I have said here.
I also have not advocated not even trying with your writing or purposely writing “beneath your means”.
And thank you for the compliment about my writing, but you don’t have to worry, I really don’t think my writing is garbage.
If I haven’t made it clear, get down a quick first draft so you have the information there, then go back and edit it.
Thank you for reading.
