If you have Aspergers you likely aren’t dumb to the extreme in anything, at least from my experience. I’m known a lot of people Imet socially, students I taught and mentored, campers I worked with who had Aspergers. Their gift was they saw the world slightly differently, were more creative in their thoughts and expressed themselves in ways others didn’t. Because of this others weren’t always quite sure how to react and as people often do, they reacted by suggesting the person was “weird,” “slow,” “crazy,” “mentally retarded,” or whatever. Since they were different from the majority they came to internalize these messages and when they had to struggle when required to fit in with the mainstream these messages popped up and they attributed their difficulty to what they’d been told. The truth was their difficulty was being forced to put limits on their creativity and expansive way of seeing the world, to restrict and hold back what was beyond others ability or willingness to try to understand. I’m going to go back and follow you. Please don’t ever believe you are dumb to the extreme in anything just because it’s hard for you to find a way to fit into the mainstream when you need to. When you don’t it’s time to forge your own path, to spread your wings and fly and let those of us on the ground appreciate what you can help us see from your viewpoint. Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.
