No one can really know anyone else’s pain. It’s not necessarily being self absorbed but when we’re in pain it’s obviously experienced by us whereas other’s pain isn’t. From their point of you of course, their pain is what’s most salient to them and it can be hard to see that what others experience is as bad as what we are.
