Pointing out the labeling phenomena and diagnosis I think is a very important point and something I’ve written about extensively. Yes a diagnosis must be accurate and take into account possible co-occuring or comorbid disorders as well as the nature of the entire individual to determine what best to focus initial therapeutic efforts on. Diagnosis can be definitely misused but when used appropriately they provide information about treatment, comorbid disorders, prognosis and outcomes, among other important considerations.
