Today I learned that blonds don’t always have more fun, at least not if you’re a lion. Darker manes on lions are correlated with higher testosterone. This results in higher levels of aggression and muscle mass and other males with lighter manes will avoid fighting them. These lions also get their choice of prefered mates an important factor as there are generally more males than females, so the females can choose who they want to father their cubs. It seems lionesses seek out lions with a thick dark mane which they apparently find quite sexy. Additionally, these brunette lions tended to be healthier, and to to have larger bellies than their blonde counterparts, a sign that they are better fed than the other other lions.
